Bird Island in Windermere FL is in Lake Butler. Some may even call it Lake Butler Island. This sanctuary for birds and quite often men and women. Previously known as Egret Island it is just over 1,450 feet long from north to south and around 1,000 feet wide and is around 10 acres in total size.
Bird Island is primarily intended to be a sanctuary for birds and of course native wildlife. The actual owner of the Island is The Audubon Society since 1958 after it was deeded to them by the the Chase Company and Frank Chase. After nearby residents begin to complain about noise from jet-skis and boats alike it was observed that the presence of the wildlife and even bird nests had significantly decreased. Not a good thing considering this used to be called Egret Island.
Known for attracting 50 boats on rare occasion and revelers you can imagine the noise level at times. In addition there were more than one severe accidents involving watercraft and an swimmers that ended with injuries and even worse.
On any given day there may be law enforcement officer that will occasionally stop by Bird Island. Also the island is easily viewed from numerous lakefront homes. Officially the Island is only open between 7AM and 9PM. There are vessel exclusion zones that are for swimmers only because of previous injuries and fatalities. You never want to be swimming around a spinning propeller. Mixed with impaired judgment bad things happen to good people.
